Topic: ‘Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) - a ten-year (2012-2022) global analysis of human and camel infections, genomic sequences, lineages, and geographical origins.

The Academy Series directs special attention toward the added value of interdisciplinary and international cooperation in global health research. Every month, speakers share insights into their research projects while focusing on research processes, methods as well as lessons learned. Following the 30-minute speaker’s presentation, the Series encourages an academic exchange between the speaker and the audience in a 30-minute Q&A session.

The GLOHRA Steering Committee member Prof. Dr. Thirumalaisamy P. Velavan – senior academic councilor, faculty, and group leader at the University Hospital Tübingen – shares insights into his research on coronaviruses and, more specifically, on MERS-CoV, a WHO priority zoonotic pathogen. He presents a global analysis of MERS-CoV infections in humans and camels over the past decade and discusses findings from his recently published article on the genomic sequences, clades, lineages, and geographical origins of the virus.
